I'm no expert on this writing thing, but the trials and tribulations that come with writing I have experienced. Here are some tips in combating the struggle.

My writing process

For me, writing is therapeutic. With all the crap that occurs during the day, I can just sit and begin analyzing what interesting things happened during the day and turn it into a story.
In order to write, I need a few things:
  • Fine point pen - I write better with them
  • Moleskin notebooks - composition notebooks work just as fine, but I prefer the space of a Moleskin
  • Music
I always write out my stories before typing them. Even when I was in school, I wrote out my essays and assignments before typing them. It's easier for me to organize this way. If its a story where I have a consice beginning, middle and end, I can easily write out a story within a week or two (these are usually shorts), otherwise it takes close to a year for me to have everything setup the way I want (during this time, I am adding and deleting/ adjusting scenes/actions/dialogue).

At times, okay a lot; I develop writers block. Its annoying.  I know what I want to write, but I can't quite work out the details. I'll have a beginning and maybe five minutes of an end scene or just a small scene to work from and then I'm stuck. To break this block, I introduce a soundtrack. Music is very effective for me when I write.

If its an action scene, I'll listen to Rock or Hip-Hop. If its a scene that is sad or emotional, instrumental music is usually my go to or anything along the lines of the  Garden State soundtrack.

Once everything is drafted, I'll type my story and perform another round of editing. It's long and tedious, but this process help to get my writing the way it's meant to be.
